About Us
History and Mandate
The NEW TO THE SAULT© program was born from the struggles of one woman who emigrated to Sault Ste. Marie from Bulgaria. Though she held a PhD in Economics and had served as CEO of several corporations in Bulgaria, she was unable to find employment and creare social networks within the community. As a result, her and her family moved back to Bulgaria. Her attempts to locate formal groups that supported newcomer settlement revealed that such services did not exist in Sault Ste. Marie, despite the presence of such services in Thunder Bay, Sudbury and Toronto.
Over the years, the Sault Community Career Centre has met with hundreds of individuals who have chosen to relocate to Sault Ste. Marie. And while most have decided to stay some have decided to leave, noting lack of support and social connections as the main reasons. For many years, there remained a need for stronger settlement programs in Sault Ste. Marie.
In response, The Sault Community Career Centre spearheaded the formation of the NEW TO THE SAULT program in 2006. Strong partnerships have been forged with Destiny Sault Ste. Marie, Community Quality Improvement (CQI), Algoma University, SaultMed, Sault College Community Employment and the City of Sault Ste. Maire as well as major employers to facilitate the development of long-term support for newcomers. Over the past few years, NEW TO THE SAULT has garnered a reputation for providing support through quality programs and services to newcomer to the community and will continue to do so for many years to come.
